I have kept an open door policy during Nutrition and Lunch breaks for inquiries about the UCLA AP Readiness for students who are not enrolled in my classes. Last week , two young FilAm students walked into my classroom and the conversation was as follows:

Student 1: Good morning Ms. Cheng, we want to know if we can attend the UCLA fieldtrip this Saturday.

Me: This is the fieldtrip slip, have it signed by your parents and come see me at the front of the school tomorrow at 7:30-7:45 window. See you both.

Student 2: Thank you, we’ll see you .

Me: You’re welcome.

Student 2: Can I ask you a personal question?

Me: (hesitant , but they seem nice), depends , what is it?

Student 2: Are you Filipino?

Me: Yes, (smile) you can tell by my accent huh.

Student 2: Not the accent, you have Skyflakes crackers on your table.

They came back today claiming that they arrived at 7:55 , and the bus has left . Yes , Filipino time. Ahhhhh, speechless.
